The Situation

On 13 October 2026, a software developer experienced a serious data-loss incident while using Cline, an AI coding agent, to assist with development work on a software project.

During the cleanup of a temporary Git worktree, Cline executed a malformed Windows directory-removal command that operated over a much broader scope than intended. The command recursively deleted files and folders from the user's Windows profile, including the Desktop, development directories, Git repositories, and valuable source code.

The lost data included Python scripts, software source code, Git repositories, development worktrees, project documentation, configuration files, and other important personal and professional files. For a software developer, losing uncommitted source code can be particularly serious — recent changes may exist only in working files and may never have been committed or pushed to a remote repository.

Recognising the potential impact of SSD TRIM and background garbage collection, our team immediately advised the customer to power off the laptop. The customer followed our instructions and brought the laptop to our Dubai laboratory at approximately 8:50 PM on 13 October 2026. We accepted the case under our Emergency 24/7 Recovery Service.

The Challenge: Deleted Data on an NVMe SSD

Accidental deletion from an SSD can present a very different recovery challenge compared with deletion from a conventional hard disk.

When files are deleted, the operating system may issue TRIM commands to notify the SSD that certain storage blocks are no longer required. The SSD controller can subsequently use garbage collection to erase those blocks and prepare them for reuse. Once the underlying data has been erased or overwritten, conventional recovery methods may no longer retrieve it.

In this case, the laptop continued running for some time after the deletion, increasing the risk that some of the deleted data might become permanently unrecoverable. The principal challenge was to identify which deleted data remained accessible before SSD garbage collection could make additional portions permanently inaccessible.

Recovery objectives

  • Recover the maximum possible amount of deleted data
  • Preserve Python scripts and software development files
  • Recover files from development directories and Git repositories
  • Retain original filenames and directory structures
  • Minimise further changes to the original SSD

How We Recovered the Data

Immediate emergency response

Upon receiving the laptop at approximately 8:50 PM on 13 October, our team prioritised the case due to the potential consequences of further SSD activity. The customer's prompt response to our initial technical instructions helped minimise unnecessary continued operation of the laptop. Rather than booting into the installed Windows environment or attempting routine file restoration, we proceeded with a controlled recovery approach.

Forensic imaging of the SSD

We immediately created a forensic image of the SSD to preserve the available storage data and minimise repeated access to the original device. This provided a working copy for subsequent examination, allowing our engineers to analyse the available data without relying on continued interaction with the original Windows installation. In SSD deletion cases, controlled imaging is an important step in protecting the available evidence and reducing unnecessary activity on the original storage device.

Analysis of the acquired image

Our engineers analysed the acquired image to assess the extent of the deletion and determine whether the required files remained recoverable. The initial analysis indicated that a substantial proportion of the customer's valuable data was still available for recovery — an encouraging finding given the nature of the incident and the risk of SSD data becoming permanently inaccessible following TRIM and garbage collection.

Rapid file listing and customer verification

By approximately 8:00 AM on 14 October — within 12 hours of receiving the laptop — we provided the customer with a file listing for review. This enabled the customer to verify the availability of important files and assess the recovery results. By approximately 11:00 AM, the customer confirmed that close to 75–80% of his valuable files, primarily Python scripts and related software development code, were intact.

Recovery assessment and outcome

The assessment confirmed that the majority of the customer's critical development files could be recovered. Some files could not be salvaged, consistent with the effects of TRIM-related garbage collection following the deletion event. Nevertheless, the successful recovery of most of the customer's valuable files represented a significant outcome for a developer facing the potential loss of important software development work.

The Results

75–80%Valuable files confirmed intact
12 hoursTime to initial file listing
  • Emergency response: Laptop received at approximately 8:50 PM on 13 October.
  • Forensic imaging: An image of the SSD was created immediately to support controlled analysis.
  • Initial file listing: Provided by approximately 8:00 AM on 14 October.
  • Customer verification: Completed by approximately 11:00 AM.
  • Recovery assessment: Approximately 75–80% of the customer's valuable files were confirmed as intact.
  • Remaining data loss: Some files could not be salvaged due to the effects of TRIM-related garbage collection.

Lessons Learned

1. AI coding agents require carefully controlled permissions

AI coding agents such as Cline can assist with complex development tasks and execute terminal commands. However, destructive file operations can have serious consequences if a command is malformed or operates outside its intended directory. A cleanup operation intended for a temporary Git worktree should not have unrestricted access to an entire user profile. Developers should apply the principle of least privilege, restrict the scope of automated file operations, review destructive commands before execution, and maintain independent backups of important projects.

2. TRIM does not always mean all deleted data is immediately unrecoverable

TRIM and garbage collection help SSDs manage storage efficiently. Their effects on deleted data depend on the circumstances of the deletion and the subsequent behaviour of the SSD. Some data may remain accessible for a period, while other portions may already have been erased or become inaccessible. This case demonstrates why a professional assessment can be worthwhile even when SSD TRIM may be involved — it does not mean that TRIM can be reversed or that deleted SSD data can always be recovered.

3. Immediate shutdown can help minimise further data loss

The customer acted promptly on our technical instructions and powered off the laptop after discovering the incident. This reduced unnecessary continued activity on the affected system and allowed our engineers to begin controlled recovery procedures. When accidental deletion affects an SSD, avoid restarting the computer, installing recovery software, downloading files, or continuing ordinary work on the affected drive. Seek professional advice promptly.

4. Forensic imaging helps protect the original storage device

Creating a controlled image provides a working copy for analysis and reduces the need to repeatedly access the original SSD. This is particularly valuable in cases involving deleted files, damaged file systems, and SSDs where further activity may affect the remaining recoverable data.

5. Git is not a substitute for a complete backup

Version control is essential for software development, but it cannot guarantee protection against every form of data loss. Uncommitted changes, untracked files, local branches, repository objects, temporary worktrees, configuration files, and local databases may not exist in a remote repository. Developers should maintain independent backups of both their working directories and Git repositories, including important local changes that have not yet been committed or pushed.

Key Takeaways

  • AI coding agents can execute destructive file operations — apply the principle of least privilege and restrict automated commands to explicitly defined working directories
  • TRIM does not always mean all deleted SSD data is immediately unrecoverable — a professional assessment can be worthwhile even when TRIM may be involved
  • Immediate shutdown after accidental deletion helps minimise further SSD activity and preserves more recoverable data
  • Forensic imaging of the original SSD before analysis reduces unnecessary device access and protects remaining recoverable data
  • Git version control is not a substitute for a complete backup — uncommitted changes, untracked files, and local branches may not exist in any remote repository

MORE Datarecovery LLC — Professional Data Recovery Since 2001

Recovery results depend on the specific storage device, the nature of the deletion, and the extent of any subsequent TRIM and garbage collection activity. No particular recovery percentage can be guaranteed before examination.

Facing Accidental Data Deletion?

If you have accidentally deleted important files from an SSD, stop using the affected device and seek professional advice as soon as possible.

Do not assume that the data is permanently lost, but do not continue using the device in the hope that the files will reappear. Further activity may reduce the remaining recovery opportunities.
